Amber reached for her father’s hand. He gently clasped her fingers.

“Daddy, can we take the mask off since it will be a new year?”

He pondered the question—which incited more thought than his six-year-old daughter probably intended. 

This New Years, though challenges ensued—there was a pervasive state of mind that gave permission for us to feel a sense of rejuvenation.

“For now, the mask has to stay on,” he said, “but thanks to the work of really smart and dedicated people, we know a day will come when we won’t need it anymore. Tonight… we celebrate that day, which still awaits us—out there on the horizon.”

“It’s kind of like a future holiday?” she asked.

“That’s right… we can think of this New Years as a future holiday.”
