waiting game

Jemine felt her heart leap into her throat. Two tables down, the lull of the hushed conversation rolled through the cafe towards her - “...had to fire our last lead designer… just wasn’t working out…”

Her palms grew sweaty over her keyboard as her eyes froze on her open website page. What were the chances? Was her inspiration to polish her ‘recent works’ section somehow pulling her here to this exact spot? Her eyes scurried over the photos of her recent logo work as the hairs stood up on her exposed forearms.

“...we wanted something more minimalistic, more modern…”

Jemine fumbled through her purse. Should she give them her card? Pretend to take an important phone call and loudly advertise her professional experience?

As her mind raced furiously, slowly more pieces of the conversation wove in.

“...need someone who can just keep their head down… we’re not looking for input, or creativity… just execute…”

Something in her shifted. She slipped her business card back into her purse and paused. Although she was eager, she had already learned the difference between taking advantage of opportunity and rushing into misaligned situations for fear a better one would never come.

The waitress came by, lifting the pot of generic coffee to indicate a refill.

Jemine nodded, leaning back into her chair. Suddenly, she felt she had all the time in the world.
