i want yellow

“You’re just a different shade of green, but all I want is yellow.”

Drew wrinkled his nose, that annoying way he did when he didn’t understand.
“Okay,” he said slowly trying to play along, “what’s wrong with that?”

You would think his willingness to “go there” to try to understand from my perspective would be heartwarming. It was not. Somehow, it always made me feel worse. This example was no exception.

“It’s like we’re this monochromatic painting, you and I, or maybe not a painting at all - just a structure, an ugly blend of blue and red - forced and smooshed together, losing all of their texture.”

Drew’s eyebrows pressed together, they way that they didn’t when he really didn’t understand.

“But blue and red make purple.”

“And that is why we’ll never be together.”
