July 1, 2020 was the 23rd anniversary of the handover of Hong Kong from the British. It was also the beginning of a new era.

The National Security Law went into effect.

Fai wandered the bustling, neon infused streets of Kowloon. At eleven, he was too young to process everything that was happening, but old enough to know it was important.

They said that ‘one country, two systems’ was no more, and Fai was living ‘one body, two lives’ through this transformation. 

At the end of his walk, Fai met up with his family for hot pot at one of their favorite Mong Kok restaurants. Hot pot always tasted best when it rained.
