listen

“Carolina, say something!”

Trish’s arms folded nervously over her chest as she stared at her wife. Her surmounting guilt screamed through the silence as it threatened to swallow them both whole. The soft noise from the distant crowd padded the hidden, vibrating tensions that filled the room.

Caro’s demeanor, however, remained the same—the projected cloud of her wife’s anxiety seemed to dissipate around her.

“Caro, you can’t just sit there in silence and leave me alone in this. You need to say something. Anything!” her voice rattled.

“I don’t.” Caro’s words soothed the space as they slid from her lips.

For the first time Trish froze. Her gaze begged for connection, anything to help her make sense of the sobering awareness she was now fighting to understand.

Caro’s eyes finally met hers.“I think it’s time we both just listen.”
